こんにちは、高千穂郷食べる通信編集長の佐藤です。
数ある高千穂の魅力の中でも上位にあがるもののひとつが高千穂牛でしょう。日本一の牛肉として評されたこともあるブランド牛のひとつです。
高千穂の山間の村落で肥育牛を150頭飼い、日本一の牛肉にすることを目標に日々奮闘するのが佐藤孝輔さん。高千穂の隣町、日之影町出身でJA職員を経て牛飼いの道へ。佐藤さんが肥育する規模は、高千穂町が属する西臼杵郡では最大規模だといいます。
JA高千穂の肥育部会では会長を務め、様々な取り組みのまとめ役でもあります。世界農業遺産に認定後は、いろいろな取材にも答える立場となられています。
現場で農業をおこなう一人として、どのような想いがあるのかを伺いました。
自分は「ただ楽しんでいる姿を見せるだけ」
— 世界農業遺産高千穂郷椎葉山で認定されてなにが変わりましたか。
佐藤さん（以下、佐藤）：取材をはじめ、話をする機会は増えましたね。ここはかつて鉱山があった影響で公害が出た地域でもあるのですが、黒歴史というわけでもないですが、改めて地域の歴史を振り返る機会も増えたと思います。
— 一人ひとりの意識は変わったりしていますか。
佐藤：まわりはわからないですけど、自分の意識は変わりました。人がどう思うではなくて、自分が世界に認定された地区にいるのだから、タバコのポイ捨てはしないとか、この地域を守っていかないといけないという自覚が出てきました。
— 生産者として後継者の育成も必須だと思いますが、世界農業遺産を教育に活かす動きはどう思いますか。
佐藤：私自身は、ここでもっと農業の担い手となる若手を増やしたいとか、子どもに継いでほしいとかは思っていないんです。この地域で楽しんで牛飼いをしているんですよね。その姿を見た子どもたち自身が決めることだと思っています。
ただ自分は楽しんでいる姿を見せるというのが良いと思っているんですよね。仕事にはやりがいをもっています。町を代表するブランドのひとつだからこそ、最先端で関わっているという誇りがあります。
高千穂のブランドを引っ張っているともいえるので、どこか地域を守っているし、町の発展にもつなげたいという思いがあります。
— 町の取り組みをみながら思うところはありますか。
佐藤：子どもが大事だと考えているんです。政策は子どもに全振りでも良いくらいではないかと思っています。
高千穂で生まれ育った子でも、他の地域の高校に行ったりする。そんなときに、できるだけ高千穂に残るようなことにつなげてほしいですね。
この地域の地元愛は人一倍
— 生産者として、この世界農業遺産の地域で生活する子どもたちに何を感じてほしいですか。
佐藤：高千穂ならではの人の良さを感じでほしいです。これは自然が生んだもので、この地域ならではのものではないかと思います。
地域愛が深くて、地元愛があるんですよね。一生懸命の人に弱くて、すぐ情が移ったり。そういう人の感じに触れることで、高千穂良いなぁという気持ちにつながれば良いのではないかと思います。
肥育している高千穂牛
— 地域と学校が一緒になって子供たちを育てて行く中で、どんな活動を行いたいですか。
佐藤：牛飼いを体験するようなことを通じて、牛を好きになるようなものはあると思うんですね。そこでむしろ高校生くらいには、お金の部分、ビジネス的な面を見せるようなことができないかと思っています。
牛一頭育てていくら儲けたのかとか、バッサリ切られて、このほんの一部でいくらくらいで取引されるのか、といったことですね。高校生は計算ができるので。
こんなに一生懸命つくったのに利益がでないというような、シビアな面を見せたいですね。もちろんやる理由はお金だけではないわけです。では何かといえば、田畑を荒らさないためだったりする。そういう、なぜ農業をやっているのかを伝えたいです。
— ふれあい体験とかとは別で、もっと奥深さをもつようなイメージですか。
佐藤：ふれあいはふれあいで大事です。牛が好きだから畜産をしていますというのも言える話ですが、それで生活ができるかというと別ですからね。
農家は会社の社長で、経営しないといけません。いろいろ伝える中で、経営におもしろさを感じてほしいですね。
地域で子どもたちの未来に接点を作る
— 子供たちにメッセージなどあれば教えてください。
佐藤：私はここで高千穂牛を育てているのがたまらないんです。今後も、牛飼いを誇りに、やりがいをもってやっていこうとしています。
みんなもそういう経験をしてほしいと思っています。
高千穂高校に神楽部があるのですが、卒業して別の地域に進学や就職で出ていっても、夜神楽の時期になると戻ってきて舞うんです。そういうのを繰り返すと、ここに帰ってこられる環境になると思うんです。地域との接点がある状態です。
だから神楽は、地域との接点になっているものだと思うんです。こういうふうに、子どもたちの居場所を、地域で作っていくということが大事だと思います。

「いつもここにいるかっこいい父ちゃん」をつくりたいんです。そういう姿を見せていけば、あんなふうになりたいと思ってくれるかもしれないし（笑）。つらそうな親を見て、あんなふうにはなりたくないなではなくて、楽しそうな姿を見せて、ああ、楽しそうだな、かっこいいなって思ってほしいですね。
